About the project

Project in Innovation Area III: Social Forces of Disintegration and Cohesion in the Research Platform “Social Dynamics of Energy Transformation” within the Funding Program “Transformation of the Energy System in Lower Saxony” (TEN.efzn)

The project “Energy Districts and Social Cohesion” explores how citizen-led energy projects at the local level can become sites of social cohesion in transitions. It focuses on emerging forces of cohesion in the context of the energy transition and on the importance of social and technical trust for the success of decentralized transformation processes. The project is based on a longitudinal case study in the energy district Helleheide in Oldenburg, examining cooperation between local residents, public administration, and private-sector actors, as well as new forms of energy citizenship. It is embedded in the research platform “Social Dynamics of Energy Transformation” and the interdisciplinary platform “Trustworthy Digitalization of Safety-Critical Energy Systems”.
